In the presence of deep water, you choose your vision: you can see the unmoving bottom or the current, the bank or infinity, just as you wish; you have the ambiguous right to see or not to see; you have the right to live with the boatman or with “a new race of fairies, laborious, tasteful, magnificent and fastidious.” The water-sprite, guardian of the mirage, holds all the birds of heaven in her hand. A pool contains a universe. A fragment of a dream contains an entire soul.
